1. 4/28/71
2. 8/6/71
3. 4/29/71

I don't know why 4/28 is always excluded from consideration. It is the best of the three.

If you listen to the shows from Feb--April, you will hear the HtoH jam develop. This is especially true during the Fillmore run, by which time "the theme" at the end is in place. As is often the case, they were pretty comfortable with the groove by 4/29. But 4/28 is no slouch--if there were no 8/06 or 4/29, people would sing its praises loudly.

Not only is 4/28 not a slouch, it is the best. 8/6 gives it a run for the money, but 4/29 does not.

well, it is one of the top 3

where it falls in the top three is so subjective that a definitive answer would be difficult to obtain if more than 2 people were asked( and those two would need to be named Bill)

Hey guy--was wondering when you might chime in...good to see ya.

Yeah, it may be about time I concede something--just a little something--on this one; never would I've thought so many good people could get something so wrong.

;)

In a minute, Bill will remind me that my "early is best" refrain might work against me in this instance...

Everyone knows that Tell and I have been fighting to the death on this issue for years. I go with 4/29 because a) I was there (and for 4/25--28), it was on one of the first tapes I had (1972?), and I just like it.

Tell likes 8/06 because he's a turd.

You've hit the nail on the head as to why the 4/29 rendition is superior to that of 8/6. While Jer's soloing on 8/6 is phenomenal and definitely among his finest efforts, in spite of the off the hook energy, the performance is rather one dimensional in comparison to the Hard to Handles of late April of the year.

snow, is there something particular that makes you find 4/28 to be the best version? I honestly just dont see how you could put it ahead of 8/6, or 8/7. In fact, finding these april versions so high up on everyone's list makes me sad, because that means there probably aren't that many epic versions of the song out there.

I like the way Pig sings it. I like the way Phil's bass pops. I like the groove the band get into. And I like the way that Jerry bends, squeezes and vibratos all the juice out of the sour-sounding note he hits way up at the top of the neck just as the song peaks.

I honestly cant believe so many people are picking 4/29 over 8/6. The way Jerry jams 8/6 is absolutely perfect, building up to a high crescendo and maintaining it before leading everybody back into the riff. His licks on it are absolutely furious. It might be my favorite Jerry "solo" ever.
The 4/29 jam is longer, sure, but I feel the arc of the jam on 8/6 is much more powerful and he seems to be playing with so much more ease throughout. His flow of ideas is so much more seamless imo. He was definitely channeling something in that performance, whereas theres moments in 4/29 where it feels like theyre trying to find the groove.

Ah, thanks casper and wisconsin! A return to sanity here at the Forum.

;)

Seriously, I have long used THAT solo for precisely that reason (my old, "but wait til you HEAR this!!!" when talking to someone about how good Jerry was, etc.).

I use that song from 71, and the StSt from Jun 68, which GoP listened to in person, BTW, and then portions of the 9/19/70 show (excerpts from DS, STSt and CCS jam, etc).

I agree 8/6 is top-dog and I say the same thing(wait til you hear this), but I alawys put the emphasis on THIS.

i'm with ya on that opinion.

I also think 8/7 has a version superior to either april show. Phil thumps!

Yes! Phil is overlooked in this discussion thus far, but figures into the 8/6 moreso for me than April ones (mix? dunno; 8/7 too).

BTW, this makes you and Caspers enlightened, moral individuals (see other post elsewhere).

it's pretty much agreed that these are the best three, which order is open for debate, my pick is 04-29 for the best, 04-28 and 08-06 can thumb wrestle for silver...

As I mentioned in the other post, we kicked this around a great deal here, and I think initially, the 8/6 version was "in the lead" (ie, I tallied up "votes"), but to be honest, I think at least here at the Forum, so many folks really love the Apr shows in general, that 4/29 may have pulled away...not that I am admitting popular opinion should count, but I made quite abit about it while it was in my favor, and then had to discount the views of the idle masses, and like any good religion, allow for the fact that only the truly endowed, the singularly moral individual, could see the light.
